A Hearing Aid Consultation
If you’ve been diagnosed with a hearing loss and treatment with hearing aids is recommended, you’ll need to decide which style of hearing aid is right for you. With so many available choices this task may seem daunting, but a consultation with an audiologist will help you with the selection process.
A hearing aid consultation will give you the opportunity to work one-on-one with an audiologist to determine which type of hearing aid is best suited for your listening and lifestyle needs. He or she will go over the various types and styles of hearing aids available, discuss options and features, and talk about technical advances, performance expectations, and any other topics of interest. This is a great opportunity for you to have any questions answered or concerns addressed. If you choose custom fit hearing aids, impressions of your ears will be made during this initial consultation.
Hearing Aid Fittings
The hearing aid fitting takes place, on average, two weeks after your consultation. Your audiologist will adjust the settings on your hearing aids for optimal performance based on your audiogram, and will give you in-depth instructions on using them, including making adjustments for different listening environments. You’ll be given strategies for effective communication skills, will be taught how to insert and remove your hearing aids, and change and/or recharge the batteries. You’ll also be given general maintenance instructions for cleaning and caring for your hearing aids.
Most likely, you’ll be scheduled for a follow-up visit within a few days. Your audiologist will want to make sure you are comfortable with your hearing aids, and make any additional adjustments if necessary.
